In Japan, more than 75,000 pigs were killed due to CSF

Japan has been fighting classical swine fever (CSF) since September 2018, when a virus was found in a wild boar in the central Gifu province.

Since then, it has spread to other Japanese pig farms. For several months, a number of pig farms had to destroy livestock.

In March and April, classical swine fever was found in several other livestock farms, as a result of which the total number of pigs killed for preventive purposes reached 75,554 on 27 farms. This is evidenced by the statistics of the World Organization for Animal Health.

In addition, experts continue to fix the virus among wild boars in the provinces of Gifu and Aichi. Already found 506 infected boars. At the end of March this year, the Japanese government in Gifu Prefecture announced a transition to a strategy to combat the virus by oral vaccination of a wild boar.

Outbreaks in Japan should not be confused with African swine fever (ASF), which is now spreading in mainland Asia. Viruses have similar names and lead to similar clinical signs, but besides them they are significantly different. In case of CSF vaccination is possible, for ASF there is no vaccine yet.
