According to FAO expert, Andrei Pankratov, over the past year, Ukrainian meat producers faced many difficulties associated with an increase in wholesale prices for various types of meat due to cheaper hryvnia, while prices in dollar terms showed no more optimism. The cost of beef, compared with other types of meat, is not so upset producers. The decrease in production and the increase in exports led to a decrease in the amount of beef in the domestic market, which supported prices. The State Statistics Service has brought data indicating that wholesale prices for beef increased (December 2016 - December 2015) by 22% in UAH and by 10% in dollar terms.
Due to the lack of Russian exports, the supply of pork was excessive, so prices remained low, despite attempts by producers to raise prices during moments of high demand. As a result - an increase in the wholesale price of pork for the year (December 2016 - December 2015) by only 6% in hryvnias and a decrease by 5% in dollar terms, while the prices of pork in the world market as an FAO index increased by 18% over the year .
Chicken meat on the Ukrainian market also had a hard time, the prices of which began to compete with pork prices and increased during the year (December 2016 - December 2015) by only 7% in hryvnias and fell by 4% in dollar terms. This is despite the fact that world prices for chicken according to the FAO index increased by 5%. This, in turn, has generated a large and successful increase in exports abroad, despite the fact that sales in the domestic market have fallen.
