Tree peony (from Lat. Paeonia x suffruticosa), he's half-shrub, is a type of hybrid plant of the genus Peony and represents the family of peony. However, some scientists do not distinguish tree pions in a separate species, but rank them in a group of varieties and forms of hybrid origin.

Today in the world there is more than five hundred varieties and hybrids of this plant, most of which grows in China. It is worth noting that tree peonies and them varieties are the product of the work of Chinese breeders. Tree peonies were introduced into Europe around the end of the 18th century, and after that they deserved absolute recognition from both professional flower growers and amateur gardeners.

The plant is a deciduous shrub that reaches a height of 1.5 - 2 meters. Stems are thick and erect, distinguished by a light brown color. The stalks of the tree peony do not die off every autumn, just like the stems of the grassy peony, on the contrary, they grow every year and gradually turn the plant into a spherical shrub. The leaves of the tree peony are twice pinnate, openwork, ornamental.

Peony has very large flowers, so their size is 12 - 20 centimeters in diameter and even more. The flowers are located at the ends of the shoots and have very diverse colors - white, yellow, pink, crimson, purple or even two-color. The peculiarity of the tree peony is that the older the plant, the more flowers it blooms. Flowering tree peony begins half a month earlier than that of the grass and lasts 2 - 3 weeks. Also, tree peonies are very cold-resistant.

Important! Tree peony is a plant that is quite frost-resistant, growing tree peonies in temperate climates is not difficult. But if in winter the temperature falls too low, then it is better to opt for specially bred cold-resistant varieties ("Hoffman", "Peter the Great", "Moscow University", etc.)
